Meghan Cain interviewed Amos Lee for the "Kentucky Kernal"
Amos Lee fell in love 10 years ago, but his affection was not for a person - it was for his music."It was just like falling in love with a girl," Lee said. "You want to be around it all the time. It keeps you coming, like a well. You can't get away."
Lee will be sharing his love with UK tonight at 8 in the Student Center Grand Ballroom as part of Wildcat Wild Nights.Lee, a Philadelphia native, started his career as an English literature major at USC and as an elementary school teacher back in Philadelphia. While in college, Lee was introduced to the acoustic guitar and songwriting, but it wasn't until he began teaching that he realized he could not suppress his desire to pursue a musical career any longer.

Production class brings artist to campus
If you’ve been fortunate enough to somehow come across the soft, hushed greatness resonating through the vocal chords of Amos Lee, then you’re one of the lucky ones. But if you haven’t yet had the chance to hear his soulful sounds, then this Saturday is your chance to remedy your musical well-being.
Perhaps you’ve heard him before and just didn’t realize it. After all, his music has been featured on hit TV shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “House,” “Studio 60,” “One Tree Hill” and “The O.C.” But similar to Nick Drake, Elliot Smith, Jeff Buckley or any other of the music industry’s underground favorites, Lee has quietly stayed under-the-radar.

Published March 21st, 2007 - Hosts: Nick and Helen Forster
Susan Tedeschi / Amos Lee
This week etown welcomes back Susan Tedeschi, one of the most exciting young blues artists in the country, in this repeat airing. Tedeschi’s not only a dynamic guitar player, but also an accomplished vocal stylist, covering tunes from the catalogs of Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Joining her in etown is Amos Lee, who recently opened for Bob Dylan as well as jazz legend Mose Allison and bluesman B.B. King. Lee gave up teaching to pursue his passion as a singer-songwriter, and shares his experiences with us; he also collaborates musically with hosts Nick & Helen Forster, resulting in the kind of magical musical moments you can only find in etown.During his performance, Amos sings: "Bottom of the Barrel", "Seen it all Before" , "Arms of a Woman" and a duet - "Angel from Montgomery" w/Susan Tedeschi.

Amos Lee - The Basement, March 28 2007
The intimate confines of the Basement were bustling with anticipation as show-goers awaited Philadelphian bluesman Amos Lee. Beforehand, however, we were entertained by the honest country sounds of Kara Grainger and it was refreshing to see a local artist in the support slot for a change.
Taking to the stage in a rather suave manner, complimented by his spectacle and beret combo, Lee and backing band opened the set and before long launched into 'Freedom', a popular single from the new album Supply and Demand. The song goes a long way to characterise Lee's style: it's uplifting, steady and earnest, sporting the lyrics "Don't want to be a martyr in this war/Don't want to hear the same excuses anymore".
It's not all serious, though, and the three-piece moved on to a classic and seductive 12-bar blues that invoked wolf whistles and cheers from the audience. Lee continued through a set comprising the odd new composition as well as songs from both albums, including crowd favourite 'Colours'. Recorded early in his career, the track features falsetto vocals and Lee was dubious as to whether he could still belt it out, saying: "If I hit it you'll be pleased, if I don't you'll imagine that I did". Much to the audience's amusement, he gave up halfway and shifted down an octave.
For an artist who's still yet to reach his thirties, Lee exudes a confidence that translates into a driven sincerity in his vocals - perhaps a product of being picked up by Bob Dylan for support duties a couple of years ago. Lee also well and truly displayed his reluctance to be put in any one box when it comes to style, effortlessly moving from rock to soul, blues to country or folk to pop.
While it's fair to say that his song-writing talents far eclipse his guitar skills, it almost goes unnoticed. You can be assured that this will eventually be remedied in the next few decades that are sure to hold a long career for Lee.

Grant Britt interviewed Amos Lee by phone from Australia for a "Special" to Go Triad
Quotes from the interview:
Please click on title link to read the whole article by Grant Britt....for Amos Lee, the focus is more about the music than the person behind it. He cites the era of Django Reinhardt as an example of what he's after.
"Music from that era, in some ways it was more folky, wasn't as much of a musician/celebrity thing," he said...
"I love country music, man," he said last week by phone from a tour stop in Australia. "Actually, Randy Travis is one of my all-time favorites." He says he listened to Travis' 1978 hit "Forever and Ever, Amen" a lot while he was making the album. But Lee is no Travis clone. On the country-flavored title cut, he sounds like a ruralized Bill Withers. But he also professes a love for gospel, particularly classic gospel groups such as the Dixie Hummingbirds and the Swanee Silvertones.
...he has toured with big-time folkies Bob Dylan and John Prine. Watching them play and listening to their music was a learning experience, he said. "They can tell you just about anything you want to know through their songs," he said.Lee, a former schoolteacher, passes on some wisdom himself in "Freedom," a song he wrote after a fight between two of his students: "Freedom is seldom found/ by beatin' someone to the ground." But Lee is more troubadour than protest singer. A mostly mellow fellow who can call up the voice of soaring soul man, he's too complex to put in a pouch. Just call him multifaceted, then sit back and watch him sparkle.

Philly native Amos Lee has often been described as being the “male Norah Jones.” And while his songs themselves sometimes come across as demure as a Jones tune, his voice possesses a strength and soulfulness that make it easy for him to transcend genres from song to song. On April 2, 2007, I got to chat with Amos about his latest album, playing with Dylan, and touring Down Under.
Photo of Amos Lee performing at the Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival here.
Gibson was proud to support last week’s wildly successful 18th annual East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival in Byron Bay, Australia. The five-day festival featured many of the world’s greatest blues, roots, and jazz artists performing on four stages before an audience of over 100,000 people.
Throughout the festival, Gibson acoustics and electrics were found in the skilled hands of Amos Lee, Ben Kweller, Bill Chambers, Paolo Nutini, Andrew Stockdale, and Paul Kelly, among other notables.
Making a welcome return to the Blues Fest were the Gibson Guitar All Stars, also known as the Flood. The Gibson Guitar All Stars are an enigmatic Sydney-based, four-piece group with a string of successful albums behind them. Americana in style—in the vein of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and the Jayhawks—their music still reflects the Australian experience in a unique way.
Set in beautiful Byron Bay, Australia’s eastern most point, the festival began in 1990 with international performances from Canned Heat and Charlie Musselwhite alongside Australia’s best local talent. Word spread in the global artist community, and the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival remains one of the most desirable and important destinations for the world’s finest artists.

After being “discovered” by fellow folk-soul-popster Norah Jones, Singer/Songwriter Amos Lee has toured with folk heavyweights like Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Norah Jones, and John Prine. His impressively indefinable 2005 self-titled debut was followed up by the long-awaited, and more melodically substantial, beefier Supply and Demand (Blue Note, 2006), followed by a US tour. Amos was nice enough to chat briefly from his hometown of Philadelphia.
